Your engagement is such a special time in your life. You are well on your way to your happily ever after, and you just can’t stop dreaming about what the future will look like. At the same time, you are so busy with the planning process that you tend to forget to slow down and enjoy it all. This is what makes your engagement photos so magical. You get the chance to take a break, celebrate each other, and tell your unique love story. As a Pittsburgh wedding photographer, I love working with clients to plan their perfect sessions. If you have been looking for the best spot for your Pittsburgh engagement photos, here are the ones I always recommend.

7227 Reynolds St., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15208
If you are looking for a way to get a variety of engagement photo backdrops, I think you might love The Frick Pittsburgh. For those who have never been before, this is actually a group of museums and historical buildings that date back to the late 19th century. Throughout your session, you are going to have your choice of photo spots, including the historic mansion, the exterior of the Frick Art Museum, and the interior and exterior of the greenhouse. You will also have access to the landscaping all across the campus. The outside of the buildings tends to be popular, giving you high arches, vintage doors, and gorgeous architecture you just can’t find anywhere else. And while the interior of the greenhouse gives you a lush space throughout any season, the glass jewel box tends to shine so brightly as a backdrop!
When it comes to photography, the museum is pretty lenient. They allow posed photo sessions, including engagement pictures, around the grounds and inside the greenhouse. They just ask that you’re not blocking other visitors. You cannot get pictures inside the Art Museum, the historic mansion, or the Car and Carriage Museum. You will still be able to incorporate the exterior of these buildings; however, the Art Museum tends to be a great option!

1047 Shady Ave, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15232
For those who would prefer a fully outdoor spot for their engagement photos, the Mellon Park Walled Garden might just be your Pittsburgh place. This spot dates back to 1943, when Richard B. Mellon built it to complement his house, which was, at the time, the largest mansion in all of Pittsburgh. The house was destroyed during World War II, but the garden remained largely intact. Since then, it has been handed over to the city, where it remains publicly owned. Across Mellon Park, you can find the Walled Garden as well as the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Phipps Garden Center.
The Walled Garden continues to be one of the best spots in the city for posed pictures. It has a romantic English garden feel with brick walls, mindful landscaping, and a stone fountain at the front of the property. As you explore the grounds, you will have your choice of backdrops. There are iron gates, private walkways, and shady trees. Additionally, this spot tends to get the best of every season, making it the perfect photo spot all year long! From the daffodils in the spring to the anemones in the autumn, there’s always something new to discover.

436 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219
Hartwood Acres Mansion feels as though it’s been plucked straight out of a fairytale. Located on 629 acres on the outskirts of the city, this estate offers a Tudor-style house complete with an English-style formal garden. The picture-perfect exterior has made this spot a favorite for engagement photos, weddings, and filmmakers in Pittsburgh. While they do not require permission or permits to use the exterior for your portraits, they tend to run a pretty busy schedule, and they give their couples exclusive access to the grounds for rentals. That means that if you want to plan your photos here, you will need to call the park office during their business hours to make sure you can come out. They also do not currently offer interior access for any reason.
For your actual portraits, you are going to have no shortage of gorgeous backdrops. I always love sticking around the exterior of the house, where you are going to get stone walls, stained glass windows, and polished wooden doors. You can share a kiss on the stairs before heading out to the garden and getting portraits amongst the perennials. With glass pavilions, tree-lined paths, and stone balconies, you are going to have your perfect portraits!

501 Martindale Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15212
Okay, if you want something truly eclectic, might I suggest The Strip District Parking Garages for your session? This is your perfect way to give you industrial chic vibes while also uncovering some of the best views in the entire city.
This area is composed of eight different garages and lots amidst the converted warehouses in the Strip District. Up on the rooftop, you are going to get one of the best golden hours with the rays setting over the buildings. There are low walls where you can sit and take some editorial pictures or share a kiss with all of Pittsburgh in the backdrop. Once you are done here, you can head down to the streets where you are going to get tons of brick exteriors, crosswalks, metal garage doors, and yellow bollards.
The best part about using this spot for your portraits? You’ll be in the chic Strip District throughout it all. You will have the option of incorporating the exteriors of the other surrounding buildings, and you can stick around for dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants. Oh, and you won’t have to stress about parking!
